Tuesday Thingers

From The Boston Bibliophile: do you have friends in real life that you met through LibraryThing? Have you attended any LT meet-ups in your area? Would you be open to attending meet-ups or is LT strictly an online thing for you?

I have made some of my very best friends in the world on-line. I was maid of honor in the wedding of a woman I met at a F2F meeting for an online forum. I traveled to Alaska to visit friends I met on another forum. Last year, while in St Paul on business, I went to a lovely little St Patrick's Day party, hosted by a friend from yet another forum. I have turned some of those folks on to LibraryThing, but I have yet to meet up with anyone that I have met only through LT. Obviously, I am open to the idea! (Another LTer and I missed out on meeting up in Amsterdam this summer by just a couple of days.) I think online forums are a great way to meet people and since I travel a lot on business, I look forward to meeting up with some fellow booklovers on my travels.

I completely agree with you, online forums are a good way to meet people. I think they can ensure you've got a common interest, and it's nice to travel and have friends where you're going!

I agree. I've met up with quite a few folks from some boards I frequent. It's been fun. Maybe I'll be able to meet more folks after we move.

Wow it sounds as though you have met some wonderful people online!
I met one of my closest friends through an online message board.

Was that me you missed out on seeing in Amsterdam, or someone else?

I think it was you, Lenore, but I couldn't remember for sure. I knew there was someone who was going to be there very close to my visit.

I haven't been on forums, etc long enough to get to know anyone that well.

wow, I'm impressed with all the good connections you've made online!

I think you can get to know a person via their online persona, if the format is right (discussion about books trumps play-acting in a online adventure game, in my book!)

That's so awesome that you've made such great friends like that! Makes me want to meet LT people even more.

If you're ever in SW VA, we'll have to meet up. I actually think I've driven near Kent on my way to and from Grand Rapids because we head up through Akron to the turnpike.

Absolutely! It would be a lot of fun to hang out and talk books and blogs. I would love to host a get-together for some of the folks within driving range. I know that some folks are nervous about it, but I'm careful and I have never had a bad experience.
