Tuesday Thingers

Today's question, from Wendi's Book Corner: Do you have a specialized blog where you only review a certain genre or type of book? If so, what is your favorite thing about that type of book? If not, what is/are your favorite genre(s)? What makes that genre(s) a favorite?
I don't have a particular favorite genre to read, so I don't have anything terribly specialized for this blog. I love all kinds of books - I could never really relate to people who only read sci-fi or only read vampire novels or only read spy novels. Why wouldn't you want to branch out? But hey - different strokes and all that, whatever makes people happy is okay with me.

As for my favorites, I love mysteries. I've found that good mysteries come in all kinds of packages - horror novels can have a mystery at their center, detective novels, crime novels, gothic novels all have their share of mystery. I do love a good scare, so a well-written horror novel is a treasure. I grew up on Dracula and Frankenstein and Alfred Hitchcock story anthologies, and I was the kid who always told stories that scared the pants off of everyone else at slumber parties.

One other thing I love - post apocalypse stories. You know the ones, where most of humanity has been wiped out by a plague or natural disaster and a small band of survivors tries to make a new civilization. I have always found those really appealing. I'm not sure whether it's the chance to start over or the struggle or the fact that these days I can almost imagine it happening, but they're a big favorite of mine.

Your post made me consider things a little differently. I began my reading career with mysteries, but these days don't really read too many of them.
But now that I think of it your way - almost every book I read has some element of mystery in it - rather something that happened in the past that you try to figure out before the author shares! So in a way, I am still reading mysteries - just in a different format!
thanks,

Have your read Unwind by Neal Shusterman or Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler?

New to the meme. First time here. Enjoyed reading your post.

I love mysteries, as I discuss at my post, but one great thing about blogging has been to get me to read a much wider variety.

We share a love of mysteries and post-apocalyptic novels! Have you read Jean Hegland's Into the Forest?

Susan and Cathy: I haven't read any of those, but I will be checking them out. When I was growing up, one of my favorite books was Phoenix Island, about a group of people on a small tropical island who are stranded and isolated after a tremendous hurricane. The way they manage to survive on the island was fascinating to me!

Phoenix Island is available on Paperback Swap---YES!

Yikes! I wanted to let you know that the poll wasn't working on my original post, so I deleted it and redid it - it IS working now! :) Wendi

Cathy, make sure it's the one by Charlotte Paul. As I recall, there are some other books with similar titles. I hope you enjoy it!

I went by title and your description, so I requested the right one, Lisa!

Post apocalypse - have you read the ya book Antarctica 2028 (I think that is the title)? I've got it in my pile to read - a lady in my book club loved it!

Thanks for stopping by and participating in Thingers last week! I've got the post up for this week. ~ Wendi
